Where does sugar come from?

Published by Cindy at 10:14 pm under Food & Drink, Where?

While sugar has a bad rap among healthy eaters, it is a natural carbohydrate source that contains no synthetic chemicals.  It is harvested from sugar cane and sugar beet.  There is no difference between sugar harvested from sugar cane and that harvested from sugar beet.  Sugar cane, which stores sugar in its long stalk,  requires a moist, warm climate to thrive.   Almost half of the sugar consumed in the United States comes from Florida sugar cane.    Sugar beet, which stores sugar in its root, grows best in a more temperate climate.   Those healthy eaters might need to talk a little louder about the ill effects of sugar:  Americans consume an average of 142 pounds of sugar per year.
